For my topic, i am trying to find out why downloading whether illegal or legal has become so popular. Im looking to find what technology made this be able to start. I have found some vague answers but nothing concrete on exactly how it started. I need to find why people prefer digital music. Also if it has to do with the rise of mp3 players or if Mp3 players were in response to digital music. I need to find out why people do not buy CD’s. Is it because of digital media is easier or some other reason? The Ipod revolution maybe connected to this. I would need to find out what effect, besides copyright law breaking, this has had on society and how it has changed society.

I like being able to learn. In our political letter, just handed back, I feel like I have a lot of room to grow. It of course is no fun not being the most amazing writer ever and being able to write a paper that gets an A every time but it is really nice to see helpful feedback on a paper that will actually help me become that most amazing writer ever. Of course I am slightly disappointed; I thought I did well on this paper, but apparently not THAT well. Just average. But that is not necessarily a bad thing when the comments on your paper actually make sense. Most of the comments are questions or ideas that I had never thought of in the first place. The rest of the comments help me decide how I can make weak points stronger points. All in all, being an average is not that bad. For once I am able to take the information I have been given and apply it to something else to make me that amazing writer in the future.

Of course by applying it in the future, I mean the near future of the next paper topic. This will be about the very big discussion of illegal downloading. To apply it to the semiotic method the topic will be closer to the history of illegal downloading and why and how it has become so popular. While I do not know the full history I do know that it started with napster and I know that its start is encompassed in the progress of technology. I believe it started because it was an easy and cheap thing to accomplish. I believe this is true because people have shifted over to programs of legal digital downloading, so apparently money and wanting to steal is no the only reasoning. Of course I would have to find this in a book somewhere to prove it and other things including the full history of downloading and other cultural references.

The feedback will help not only when writing the topic but when researching it as well. I can use the feedback to decide what ideas need to be present in my paper and make sure I find the answers to those questions and what they suggest. The feedback will help accomplish make a full completed paper.

I need to improve my writing. In order to do this I will pay full attention to the feedback given and follow every trail that it gives me.

As I was reading other Argument analyses’ of Jacoby’s “Bringing Back Flogging” I found many differences and similarities to my own analysis.

Bela believes that Jacoby’s message was the justice system will work better if we reintroduce dome puritanical punishments. While not exactly like my own thoughts of Jacoby’s message that harsher punishments will have a better learning benefit and will be better for society, there are similarities as to how the justice system should be run. Bela’s argument does not outright say that these punishments of whipping and flogging are “harsher”(than jail time) but she does state that they will help the justice system. I also do not believe that anyone would see whipping and flogging as something nice. It seems Bela and I have come to the same conclusion about Jacoby’s message.

Like me, Bela believes Jacoby’s argument to be moral. She also states how he mentions how horrible jail time is in order to get people to change their minds to whipping people instead. She also touches mostly upon the points that Jacoby failed to mention and brings herself into the mix when she disagrees with his argument do to lack evidence. On the other hand, I tried to make my analysis of what Jacoby did write in his paper and how he wrote it. Also being opposite of Bela, I tried to keep my emotions out of it and focus on Jacoby.

EIR6 has a different idea about Jacoby and his goal than what I had. Throughout the paper EIR6 criticizes Jacoby for writing that jails are worthless. He does not believe whipping or floggings are the right direction to take. EIR6 states how jail time leaves “visible scars” on people. At the end of his paper he states that Jacoby’s goal must have been to inform people about the problems with the prison system.

EIR6 analysis crosses with mine when he states that Jacoby uses facts and statistics to support his argument, like the price to keep an inmate for a year. He also compares Jacoby’s anaylsis to what was happening at the time in which this editorial was written. EIR6 states that the article was written in response to the fact that gangs were bostons biggest problems at the time of writing. I, however, stated that it was a response to the Juvenile Crime Control Act.

I feel Amanda Huggenkis’ article was most like my own. Her summary of Jacoby’s goal is basic but states how we should use flogging as a substitute for jail time. She focuses on what is written and how it is written instead of emotion. With this method she shows that he used a moral method to persuade readers. We both used the example that caging people is inhumane. At the end of her analysis, she also mentions how the editorial was a response to a crime wave in boston.

BellaBerly has a different idea of Jacoby’s goal that is closer to EIR6’s. Her analysis leads me to believe that she thought the article was just about the effectiveness of the punishment system. This is a stance far away from mine, which states he was looking for harsher punishments to help criminals and society. She takes another step away from my thoughts when she says that Jacoby uses logic and fact to get his audience to believe him. BellaBerly follows up these ideas writing that Jacoby’s editorial completely focused on getting us to “think beyond our present ideologies,” while I wrote that Jacoby was trying to persuade his readers to actually try and change the penal system to one of whippings and floggings.

This class is named “writing as communication” because the goals are to get us to really get a specific message across to our audience. It is not writing for our own benefit necessarily, but writing so the audience understands. We are trying to create a ritual view of communication. As writers, we do not want the message to just arrive at the audience. We want the audience to understand the message and the meaning behind the writing. We are trying to communicate using the form of writing.

John Carey sees communication as culture. This view comes from the ritual model of communication. People are not just transferring information but they are creating and recreating meaning within a community. The communication becomes a way of connecting to each person within this community. Communication becomes culture when everyone creates the same meaning with specific topics.

In this class we are learning in a specific way based on our culture. What we learn we now have to try and recreate that into a from of communication so the world can understand.

Everyone is talking about one thing- Feedback. The Conversation circles around the benefits of feedback that are allowed to students because of the course wiki and the wordpress blogs.

Steph’s post talked more specifically about the tasks happening in the specific classes but also mentioned all each class comments on another class and vice versa. The Wiki is letting outside sources come and analyze work like a real world situation. These new ideas are helping students give better feedback to others and also get more ideas for their writing in the future. Most students conclude that getting more feedback and more detailed feedback was helping them write better.

The Wiki and the blogs create a dialogue between writers. While everyone is anonymous on the blogs, outsiders can still read and respond to what is being said. Anonymity lets students truly speak there mind and say what is important without feeling embarrassed. The Wiki is more interactive. It is easier for people to respond and read a response. People can edit pages directly to leave a comment about a specific topic. New ideas are created when the conversation continues leading to more critical thinking. The course wiki is able to help students by allowing this type of dialogue. It lets each student get the information they need to make a better paper in the future.

I do believe the Wiki and the blogs have brought an important aspect into writing. More feedback and information is coming into the hands of the writer. Responses to writing are the only way some one will know how to write better the next time. These make the wiki and blog beneficial when it comes to writing.

I find that between all the ideas of what Babel is about, Almost everyone mentioned Culture and communication. Each culture has its own way of communication. Any other culture would have to fight through a communication barrier in order to be understood. Our Class is about being able to communicate to an audience and to make sure we as writers are understood by the readers. Just like the movie we are trying to break through a barrier to reach the people on the other side. We are trying to get a full meaning across so others can understand that meaning. The movie shows this idea because we see in each story a barrier of language and culture and people trying to get their meaning understood

As we continued to watch babel, the movie has seemed to stay the same. It still pointed out the cultural issues of communication. Everyone is doing what they can. The doctor in Morrocco(?) was doing everything he could for the woman but people still didnt trust him just because he isnt from the same country. the communications has become a little better in a sense that the japanese girl is having friends and found people to be with. However the nanny was still seen in a bad light just because of her nationality. she is trusted with the kids but to others she is an untrusted individual and maybe even a kidnapper. The movie is about interpersonal communication and the distrust we have just because of the country we live in.

Communications 375 is a writing course. When the class all sat down and expected to hear the many papers we were going to write this semester, there was a surprise instore. We watched Babel, A movie. And Babel is not a movie about authors. It was interesting to find, however, that Babel and this writing course have a connection. Writing is based on words. These words can have a different meaning to anyone who reads them. Babel and Comm 375 are connected in teaching how words are only as good as others perceive them.

A quote from this Class, Resource for Instructors, states ” Communication as a discipline is concerned with studying contexts, contents, functions, and media of Human expression.” This quote is interpreted as communication is by the people, And that this interpretation is only as good as another persons interpretation. The author of the quote will most likely have a different interpretation than its readers.

Babel follows different people from all over the world. The American couple in Morocco had something keeping them apart. Even though they are of the same culture they still couldnt talk out their problems. They had to different forms of communication and therefore could not resolve the problem and the wife was left in a depressed and angry state. The deaf girl could not communicate in the same way and therefore lead to the boy running away from her because he couldnt interpret what was going on.

Even people that understood the same language could not necessarily understand and interpret the rituals of another culture. The two american children Understood what was being said them in Mexico even though it was in spanish. The traditions, like the headless chicken, left them confused and not wanting to participate with everyone else.

Communication can only be as good as it is understood. Therefore communicators need to be able to communicate in a language as close as humanly possible to their intended meaning. Babel shows the communication issues and comm375 is a way to learn how to fix them.
